Andrew Garfield Breaks Silence On No Way Home's Best Picture Nomination Snub

After Sam Raimi's third Spider-Man film which stars Tobey Maguire failed to make an impact much like the first and second film, Sony rebooted Spider-Man with Andrew Garfield as the new Peter Parker. Unfortunately, Andrew's Spider-Man got cut off once again and didn't even develop into a trilogy. However, these reboots paved the way for the current MCU Peter Parker and even assembled a three-generation appearance of Spider-Man in last year's Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The return of Tobey and Andrew was already circulating the internet even before the film's release, as luck would have it, the return of the two was able to satisfy the audience. Aside from No Way Home's box-office success, it was also labeled as the best Spider-Man film in history, thanks to the crossover we never thought would happen. With the audience's overwhelming response to the film, fans thought that the film would make it to different categories at Academy Awards that include Best Picture. Surprisingly, the film was only nominated for one Oscar, Best Visual Effects.

In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live, No Way Home star Andrew Garfield was asked about his thoughts about the film not getting a Best Picture nomination. Garfield somewhat dodged the question and praised Jon Watts instead for the story's focus on the brotherhood of three-generations of Spider-Man. Garfield explained,

"It’s a great movie, Jon Watts. Jon Watts is an incredible director. He pulled together all these different stories and strands and didn’t make it feel like, kind of cynical. He made it feel totally heartfelt and important. And the other thing I love is like, I love this idea of destiny and the idea that if neither Toby’s nor my Peter Parkers had been like landed into that particular universe, of Tom Holland’s universe, then he might have lost his MJ, if I wasn’t there to catch her. Sorry, spoiler. And he might have gone down a dark path if Tobey wasn’t there to kind of appeal to his better angels. I love that. The idea that we were called in there for a specific mentoring, brotherhood kind of reason. That’s just beautiful to me."

It is safe to assume that the appearance of Tobey and Andrew in Spider-Man: No Way Home really carried the film towards its massive box-office success. However, for the Oscar Awards, superhero films have been infamously ignored by The Academy, except for MCU's Black Panther, and DC's Joker.

Spider-Man: No Way Home being snubbed at the Oscars has continually been subject to criticism, the Academy was also criticized when they didn't nominate DC's The Suicide Squad and MCU's Eternals for Best Visual Effects. For No Way Home, the film already broke box-office, labeled as the best superhero crossover film in history, and not winning any awards won't change the fans' perception of the best Spider-Man film.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled for digital release on March 22.
