James Gunn and Peter Safran have addressed the future of the DC Universe under their helm but one thing the duo has been mum about is Amber Heard's intriguing status. The controversial star claimed during her highly-publicized legal battle with Johnny Depp that her role in the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has been reduced significantly by Warner Bros., possibly due to her controversies.

According to some reports, Amber being given a minimal role in the sequel was a way for the studio to write her off completely but obviously, Gunn and Safran's appointment as DC Studios co-CEOs changes everything. Now, a new rumor claims that even with lesser screen time, Heard still manages to be the true star of the film.

Twitter page @GNGeekNation reports that test screenings for Aquaman 2 have received disappointing reviews from folks who've seen the Jason Momoa-led project. An anonymous insider claims that Mera's arc was the only redeeming quality of the anticipated project and director James Wan may have suffered from WB's decision-making process. The insider adds that WB is trying to bring back the film's dramatic arc.

Setting aside Amber's controveries, it can't be denied that she was one of Aquaman's highlights and it's a shame her scandals derailed what could have been an amazing DC career. But then again, Gunn and Safran are determined to start fresh and with the exception of a number of actors, it's evident that DC Studios wants to wipe out the former DCEU to make way for a fresher and hopefully much better franchise.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is slated for theatrical release on December 25, 2023.
