Netflix and Amazon may be dominating the online streaming service game but they're still young to theatrical releases. It looks like that's about to change, however. According to IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond, the media giants are considering to release some of their films in IMAX.
As THR reported, Gelfond says, "We're in active discussions with all of the streaming [services] about an IMAX release."
Gelfond also said that this would help give their films an opening day, and said that the streaming giants recognize the "the number one way to event-size the size [of a movie] is in IMAX."
There are definitely some Netflix titles worth seeing on IMAX. I'm sure the idea of giving their future films an actual theatrical release date would make their premieres more eventful.
He went on to say, "The closest analogy I have is, if an airline said to you, you can sit in first class and drink champagne or you can sit in the back row. So where are people going to go? I noticed from informal discussions that a lot of them are going to IMAX."
Of course, a lot of people would rather watch certain films in IMAX because it obviously has the best picture quality but I wonder if there will be enough people who will pay to go watch them on IMAX when they could just wait a few days or weeks to see them at home.
