Sinister characters who like to smile a lot is not an entirely new concept, but with the long-awaited adult-animated musical series debuting on Amazon Prime soon, fans can't help but wonder why Alastor can't stop smiling in Hazbin Hotel. Here's what we know.
Why Alastor Can't Stop Smiling Explained
Alastor is one of the most powerful overlord demons in Hell, who happened to be bored when he stumbled upon Charlie Morningstar's Hazbin Hotel project.
From the pilot initially released on YouTube, Alastor was always depicted as a smiling demon whose voice always sounded like he swallowed a radio. Hence, his nickname Radio Demon.
But what many fans can't wrap their head around is the reason why he can never stop smiling. Is the smile permanent or does Alastor like to smile for some reason?
Well, for starters, Alastor is notoriously known for his sadistic sense of humor in the Hazbin Hotel story. In general, he finds other people's suffering hilarious and wildly entertaining.
He is described to be a sadomasochist who gets "turned on" by his own pain and watching others' pain, which keeps him smiling even in the process of being hurt himself.
Though it is implied that it is possible he could stop smiling at some point, he visibly doesn't want to. Why is that? There's more to it behind his facial expression than people think.

Smile is a Sign of Power for Hazbin Hotel's Alastor
At one point in the Hazbin Hotel series, Alastor's mother used to sing a rendition of "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile" to shield him from the harsh and cruel world, which is probably one of the reasons the smile is always etched across the face of Alastor.
Considering that most civilians are terrified of Alastor, he takes this as an opportunity to maintain his domineering stance even more — through his smiling expression.
Alastor can likely stop smiling if he wants to, but the point is, he doesn't seem to want to. Contrary to what others think, the Radio Demon sees smiling as a form of power.
Heck, even when Vaggie warned Charlie to never trust the guy, Alastor was quick to say that he genuinely wanted to help Lucifer's daughter in building the Hazbin Hotel to rehabilitate demons, despite seeing no good end to the plan.
Had he not been interested in the first place, he reassured them that he would have wreaked havoc already, with a big wide smile still plastered on his face.
Soon enough, we'll learn more about Alastor and the other starring characters in Hazbin Hotel once the series debuts this January 19.
