Aladdin Songwriters Talk the New Songs for the Upcoming Live-Action Film

Mulan may have been the center of attention the past few days, but we just got an update on the live-action version of Aladdin. News has it that the movie is going to be having a bunch of new songs, and writers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul give us a small idea.

Talking to Variety, Paul explains:

"We got to write a new song for Jasmine… Alan [Menken] wrote a beautiful piece of music and [Jasmine actress Naomi Scott] is incredible."

The movie also includes a new duet for Aladdin and Jasmine, as well as a new verse to Arabian Nights.

Fun fact is, the original movie was also supposed to include a song number from Jafar called Why Me. The song never made it to the final movie, but it was deemed good enough to be included in the live-action Aladdin play. You can even check out the storyboard and song on Youtube:

Though Guy Ritchie is a more stylistic and ‘cool' director, I'm kind of happy that he's making this Aladdin movie a musical. I'm not expecting every song from the original to make it to live-action, but I would already be happy if we got Will Smith's rendition of Never had a Friend Like Me.

Aladdin comes to theaters May 24, 2019.
