While artificial intelligence is programmed as helper bots for their users, ChatGPT's latest upgrade, GPT-4o, makes the AI chatbot much closer to human interaction and connection than it was before.

GPT-4o's main goal is to upgrade its already advanced technology for consumers to dive into, however, recent reports have noted that the AI chatbot update has more emotional impact on their communication.

A far cry from Siri's monotonous voice, here are 9 AI romance movies you ought to watch now that GPT-4o has opened the floodgates:

  1. Her (2013)

Nothing beats the classic Her movie, a 2013 AI romance flick starring Joaquin Phoenix as the lonely writer Theodore who falls in love with an operating system (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) built to "meet his every need".

Her undeniably belongs on top as the film explores the unconventional 'form of love' and longing to connect with someone who understands you. Except, romancing artificial intelligence comes at a price, of course.

Her movie is available to stream on Max; Hulu and Prime Video on premium subscriptions.

  2. Black Mirror Season 2 Episode 1: "Be Right Back" (2013)

While Black Mirror is a dystopian series rather than an AI-centered movie, it's worth noting that each episode serves as somewhat standalone, so treating Be Right Back as a flick evokes the same experience.

In this case, Be Right Back sees Martha (played by Hayley Atwell) grieving over her deceased lover, Ash (Domhnall Gleeson). Considering that she can't seem to move forward from his death, she tries out a new service that could let her get in touch with those beyond the grave.

For the uninitiated, Black Mirror episodes are intended to heed as warnings on technology reliance. Be Right Back serves as one of the most disturbing storylines included on the roster.

All six seasons of Black Mirror are available to stream on Netflix and Prime Video.

  3. Alita: Battle Angel (2019)

Alita: Battle Angel follows the titular character (played by Rosa Salazar) who happens to be an abandoned cyborg with lost memories. She finds herself under the care of Doctor Ido (Christoph Waltz) who realizes Alita is no ordinary android.

The film is based on a popular Japanese manga created by Yukito Kishiro, which was published in 1990-1995. Although the film does not dwell on the romantic bit of an AI and a human relationship, it has its own quirks worth watching.

Alita: Battle Angel can be streamed on fuboTV; Hulu on a premium subscription.

  4. Ex Machina (2014)

Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson) wins a contest that allows him to spend time with a beautifully designed robot, Ava (Alicia Vikander), under the Turing test to determine the capabilities and consciousness of the android.

Little did Caleb and Nathan (Oscar Isaac) know, Ava had been saving her tricks up her synthetic sleeve.

Ex Machina is available to stream on Max; Hulu, The Roku Channel and Prime Video on premium subscription.

  5. Free Guy (2021)

Free Guy follows an NPC bank teller (played by Ryan Reynolds) residing in an open-world video game built by Jodie Comer and Joe Keery's characters, Millie and Keys. Little did Guy know that he could end up rewriting his own story outside his own programming.

The 2021 flick imposes the possibility of an NPC going sentient after learning more from human behavior and interactions, specifically when Millie entered the game.

Free Guy gets a happy ending, though misses the opportunity to expound what a sentient variable could do when it doesn't stick to the program.

Free Guy is available to stream on Disney+.

  6. Zoe (2018)

Zoe follows a forbidden romance between colleagues — an engineer and a robot — seeking to perfect the ideal romantic relationship any human would crave.

The 2018 flick poses a similar cautionary tale on what happens when a human falls in love with a synthetic android. Although, quite surprisingly, this one comes with a twist that you'll have to find out yourself.

Zoe is available to stream on Prime Video.

  7. Auggie (2019)

Auggie has the same implications as Her and Black Mirror, except that Felix Greystone (played by Richard Kind) has more to lose.

While Theodore in Her doesn't really have a family of his own, Felix does, and his addiction to the Auggie technology (a pair of augmented reality smart glasses) is what would drive him further away from connecting with his household.

Auggie is available to stream on Tubi, Peacock, The Roku Channel, and Prime Video.

  8. AI Love You (2022)

As the film title implies, AI Love You sees how a soon-to-be-terminated AI transfers his consciousness into the body of a real man to get closer to the woman it fell in love with.

The Thai Sci-Fi romance drama turns the tables on humans, where the program was the first to fall in love with the human, for a change.

The ending leaves much to the viewer's imagination, considering its element of how the subconsciousness of the real owner of the body is retained, despite the AI's takeover.

AI Love You is available to stream on Netflix.

  9. A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)

While the 2001 flick, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, is not entirely a romance movie, it does feature an android depicted in the body of a boy, one of the earliest technologies "programmed to love."

Get your box of tissues ready for this tear-jerking journey of an artificial boy slowly figuring out that he can be much more than a machine — a machine who could love his mother more humanely.

The A.I. Artificial Intelligence movie is available to stream on MGM+, Prime Video, and Paramount+ on subscription.
