ABC Passes on Greatest American Hero Reboot

Last year there was news that came out that ABC was working on a reboot for The Greatest American Hero with a woman in the lead. As it turns out, ABC has passed on the show, and the reboot is not coming anytime soon.

This was confirmed by Hannah Simone (New Girl) who was supposed to play the lead role of Meera, an ordinary school teacher who is given a super suit by some aliens so she could protect the planet. Here's her post:

Episodes were originally supposed to run for half an hour with Rachna Fruchbom (Fresh Off the Boat) and Nahnatchka Khan attached as showrunners.

It's worth noting that Phil Lord and Chris Miller had also attempted to reboot The Greatest American Hero for FOX back in 2014 and 2015, but those pilots were rejected as well.

With ABC recently cancelling Inhumans, it seems that the superhero genre isn't always going to be a hit. Several cult classics have been getting the reboot treatment, however, and it may only be a matter of time before someone picks up The Greatest American Hero. It's probably just a matter of getting the reboot right.
