Naoko Yamada is one of the most well-known directors among anime fans, and it was just revealed that the A Silent Voice director is working on an original anime for Amazon Prime’s Modern Love: Tokyo.

Recently, it was revealed that Yamada is directing an anime episode in the upcoming Amazon Prime anthology series (via Comic Natalie).

In case you’re unfamiliar, Modern Love: Tokyo ~Samazama na Ai no Katachi~ is a Japanese anthology series that consists of six episodes: five live-action and one anime episode.

As an anthology, the show’s episodes will feature standalone stories, though all of them are centered around the theme of love in modern times.

Yamada is a well-known animator who worked for Kyoto Animation from 2003 to 2020. She has worked as a key animator on a wide range of shows, including Air, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and Clannad.

After these, Yamada directed various shows and movies for Kyoto Animation, including K-On! and Sound! Euphonium. She has also worked as the OP Director for Kaguya-sama: Love is War Season 2.

Though Yamada is most known for being the director of A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi in Japanese), an anime film that’s based on the manga of the same name by Yoshitoki Oima.

The movie follows Shoko Nishimiya, a grade school student with impaired hearing who was bullied by her classmates to the point that she had to transfer schools.

One of the instigators was Shoya Ishida who himself gets bullied for his actions. Years later, Shoya sets out to make amends for his actions toward Shoko.

It explores themes such as bullying, disabilities, and suicide, though it does so in a proper manner that garnered praise from critics and fans alike.

The film was released in 2016 in cinemas and 2019 via Blu-Ray in the US. It became a hit with critics and fans as it has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.95 on MyAnimeList.

Modern Love: Tokyo ~Samazama na Ai no Katachi~ featuring the work of A Silent Voice director Naoko Yamada is set to release exclusively on Amazon Prime on October 21, 2022.
