Fans of the '80s film are in for a massive treat as MGM just confirmed that they're developing a new RoboCop prequel series!

The said series will be centered on main baddie Dick Jones, originally played by Ronny Cox. RoboCop co-writer Ed Neumeier confirmed the exciting project during an interview with Moviehole. Here's what he had to say:

I'm working with these two writers, Dave Parkin and Rob Gibbs, who bought this idea to a TV producer friend of mine, who then brought it to me. The first time I heard it I knew it was a cool idea because I could see a lot of things you could do with it. It's such an interesting character.

Avid fans of the original science fiction film series will be relieved to know that the prequel will actually be based on the classic RoboCop and not the 2014 reboot everyone seemed to hate. The only downside though is that the beloved protagonist won't be making an appearance in the project as it will focus heavily on the evil Omni Vice President. Other details about the prequel are still being kept under wraps.

In other RoboCop-related news, the heroic cyborg is set to make his grand comeback in RoboCop Returns, a direct sequel to the 1987 classic. The film will be helmed by Abe Forsythe.
