9-Year-Old Dana Fischer Becomes The Youngest Magic: The Gathering Player to Win Cash at Grand Prix

At the Magic: The Gathering Grand Prix at MagicFest Austin last month, 9 year-old Dana Fischer set a new world record for becoming the youngest MTG player to win cash at a Grand Prix. She ended with a 10-4-1 record in 46th place, and peaked at 13th with 8-1 record at the end of the Grand Prix's first day.

In the Modern Grand Prix event, Fischer played Green/Black Elves, her signature Modern deck that she's been playing for years. You can watch her interview at Grand Prix Austin 2020 via the ChannelFireball Twitch channel below:

She also recently wrote a tournament report about her world record-breaking experience, which you can read at ChannelFireball.com.

"I think one reason I did so well was because I got a good night's sleep and had a good breakfast," Fischer said in her ChannelFireball tournament report "Good sleep for me is normally getting 10-11 hours, and before the event I got a full 12 hours of sleep, which I think is one of the biggest things that helped me do so well."

"I was also really glad to win cash because it is something that I can share with my sister Sadie, since she doesn't play much Magic and doesn't usually come on these trips," Fischer said her report. "If Sadie sees something she thinks the both of us will want, I can buy it with the money I won, and that makes me feel like I am not just playing Magic for myself, but that I'm also helping my whole family by playing a game I love."

Nearly every month, Fischer and her father travel from their hometown of Carmel Valley, California to attend major Magic tournaments across the country, and she's been sharing her experience on her Twitter page now with 7,600+ followers. Fischer's GP Austin 2020 finish counts as her second Day 2 finish. Last year, she became the youngest person to make it Day 2 at a Grand Prix at MagicFest Los Angeles 2019. Making Day 2 of an MTG Grand Prix is not easy: a player has to have at least 18 match points (at least 6 wins out of 8 rounds) in Day 1 to qualify to the next day

Fischer also won the Play It Forward playmat prize for being the top-finishing woman or non-binary player at GP Austin.

Congrats to Dana Fischer for becoming the youngest MTG player to win cash at a Grand Prix event.
