86: Eighty-Six Anime Episode 15 Recap

What I loved about Episode 15 of the 86 anime, is its focus on the little things, even as it discussed huge ones. The episode begins ominously, with Federacy analysts predicting a massive Legion attack. Grethe reunites Shin with his former comrades and informs them that several countries have survived the attacks. However, there is no news of the Republic, leaving Lena's fate uncertain.
Naturally, Shin has a lot of feedback about the situation, but Grethe remains sceptical for now. The battlefield might be where Shin belongs - or thinks he does - but no one in the Federacy shares his experiences.
Later on, Frederica talks to Shin about her knight, Kiriya, who was also a Nouzen: part of Shin's clan, and his distant relative. The little girl reveals that the Empire fell because they declared war on their neighbors, and the people rebelled. The Legion was created for offense, rather than protection, so the royal family had to rely on their personal guard for protection.
The fight against the rebels kicked off Kiriya's sanity slippage, but Frederica blames herself for his death. When Ernst captured her, he faked her death by showing her bloody mantle. Kiriya, however, believed her to be dead and let the Legion capture him.
This highly emotional scene is presented in a near-perfect way. It's particularly poignant that Frederica draws instead of looking at Shin while narrating Kiriya's story. The focus on the instant coffee Shin nervously makes while listening is somehow stronger than tears or face closeups would be. These aesthetic choices really fit in with Frederica's demand that Shin's starts thinking about his future and enjoying his life during breaks. This advice mirrors Lena's in the previous cour, meaning that the Handler haunts the narrative, even when absent.
Then, in the post-credit scene, she's absent no longer. Surrounded by opened, uneaten chocolate, a mirror to the previous scene's focus on little things, Lena is preparing for battle. Her noticeboard ominously suggests that many 86 soldiers have died already. How will the next battle unfold, and will there be any overlap between Lena and Shin? Stay tuned to find out!

The scheduled release date for Episode 16 of the 86 anime, titled "Even So," is going to be this Sunday the 31st of October that is, Halloween time! Fans in Canada, the US, and Europe will be able to access it from October 30.
