Mo Dao Zu Shi Season 3 was the show's last. While there's no exact equivalent, here are some works, including anime and donghua, that are similar to Mo Dao Zu Shi you might want to check out.

While the animated adaptation of the web novel and manhua by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu was not as deep and complex as the source material, it still did amazing things for fans who will surely be sad no Season 4 has been planned.

Undoubtedly, the Chinese-animated show will leave a gap in the world of animation for those who eagerly followed Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji from the beginning, so here are some alternatives.

1) Heaven's Official Blessing

Heaven's Official Blessing, an LGBTQ+ donghua on Netflix, is also based on a work by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, so it had to be the first on our list.

Heaven's Official Blessing follows Xie Lian, a disgraced prince who ascended to the realms of heaven when young but was subsequently banished back to the mortal world.

He ascends another time, only to be banished again. Returning for the third time in disgrace, he meets a demon who rules over ghosts and terrifies heaven and has had an interest in him for quite some time.

Like Mo Dao Zu Shi, Heaven's Official Blessing has a setting that is reminiscent of ancient China, and romance between two male characters.

Once again, the characters are three-dimensional and easy to empathize with, making it an obvious choice for fans of Mo Dao Zu Shi. Plus, being on Netflix, it's easier to find.

2) Scumbag System

Also based on a work by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (shocker!) Scumbag System is nevertheless quite different from Heaven's Official Blessing in that it resembles an isekai anime.

Japanese works aren't the only ones to feature this trope, for better or for worse.

Scumbag System is another BL donghua, which follows Shen Yuan, a reader who gets transported into a novel he thought he knew well.

Unfortunately for him, he doesn't get to impersonate the hero but the villain, and as much as he tries to avoid this fate, his actions are limited by the monitoring system that keeps the plot going.

Knowing that the novel will peak with his disciple seeking revenge against him, Shen Yuan, now Shen Qingqiu, is trying to avoid the ending he knows is coming.

But as the protagonist is meant to suffer horribly by Shen Qingqiu's actions, the latter's fate seems sealed.

3) Yona of the Dawn

Moving to anime, and to a quite different style, Akatsuki no Yona or Yona of the Dawn, might still be fun for those who enjoyed Mo Dao Zu Shi.

The shoujo anime boasts a well-thought-of historical-like setting based on East Asia, so you can expect some similar aesthetics.

The show, which follows a princess out to retake her kingdom, also has a large cast of complex characters, and, of course, magic.

4) Code Geass

As a mecha dystopia, Code Geass isn't the first anime that comes to mind when you're looking for something to watch after Mo Dao Zu Shi.

However, viewers who enjoyed one are likely to find value in the other, especially if they are here for complex, morally grey main characters.

Code Geass depicts a futuristic world in which the Empire of Britannia has dominated many countries, including Japan.

Lelouch, the main character, is a young Britannian prince who attends school in Japan, largely shielded from the injustices faced by citizens, who have been stripped of basic rights.

Lelouch's ultimate goal, however, is not to keep this status quo; but to destroy it.

Following his mother's death and his father's indifference, Lelouch is determined to get revenge and make the world a better and safer place for his traumatized sister, even if this means destroying the empire that birthed him.

When he is gifted the Geass, a mysterious and very dangerous power, he will let nothing stop him from attaining this goal.

The aesthetics of the two animated works are as different as can be, and Code Geass, while often funny, isn't as whimsical as Mo Dao Zu Shi due to its much more serious protagonist.

Regardless, both works feature a main character who makes controversial choices and toys with unimaginable powers to protect their loved ones and attain their goals.

5) Twin Spirit Detectives

Back to donghua, but once again in a modern setting, Twin Spirit Detectives is a B.CMAY PICTURES production, like Mo Dao Zu Shi.

It follows twin brothers Sun Xiaotu and Sun Xiaohu, who are paranormal investigators.

While they usually try to separate their personal lives from the hauntings they investigate, the brothers soon find that they have become the targets of said hauntings.

While not the most similar to Mo Dao Zu Shi, the show follows two main characters with an interesting dynamic as they research paranormal phenomena.

This might remind you of Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji's many investigations.

6) A Will Eternal

Yet another B.CMAY PICTURES work! This one features Bai Xiaochun, a likable young man who can still be very annoying at times, not unlike Wei Wuxian.

Bai Xiaochun is mostly driven by his fear of death and the wish to live forever.

While that's not exactly the case with Wei Wuxian, both are easy-going, sarcastic, and occasionally exasperating characters who experience a lot of character growth.

Both donghua feature similar settings with cultivation worlds.

7) The Emperor’s Strategy

The Emperor's Strategy is another BL work in a world reminiscent of ancient China and a healthy dose of political intrigue.

While it doesn't boast the extremely favorable reviews of Mo Dao Zu Shi, it is a very interesting work if you enjoyed the former.

The show follows the main character, Chu Yuan, a young emperor trying to prove his worth, and Duan Baiyue, the king of Xinan, who tries to support him.

The donghua thrives on their interactions, making it worth watching to those interested in politics and wuxia settings, as well as ship-worthy main characters.

8) Spiritpact

Spiritpact, also known as Ling Qi, is a great option if you want another fantasy anime that is actually a donghua, rather than a similarly-themed Japanese work.

If the reincarnation aspect of Mo Dao Zu Shi appeals to you, you might be happy to find out that Spiritpact is similar.

The main character, Jinghua Yang, lives in poverty and has little hope for a better life.

After a mysterious encounter, he dies and becomes a spirit — not exactly an OP isekai success story but that's probably for the best.

When he meets a high-ranking exorcist, he becomes his shadow, protecting him from every danger. Soon, their bond develops into something more than admiration.

9) Banana Fish

An anime taking place in modern-day New York doesn't sound like Mo Dao Zu Shi. However, the MAPPA show is another BL anime whose main duo solves mysteries.

It follows Ash Lynx, a troubled teenage gang leader whose shell-shocked brother only ever utters the words, "Banana Fish."

When Eiji, a Japanese photography student, gets caught up in Ash's messy life, the two teenagers become very close and work together to solve the mystery of Banana Fish.

Be warned that their relationship is absolutely heartbreaking.

10) Laughing Under the Clouds

For a historical anime with a shoujo demographic, check out Laughing Under the Clouds.

It is a Japanese rather than a Chinese story, but the Meiji era setting might appeal to fans of Mo Dao Zu Shi's pseudo-historical environment.

Laughing Under the Clouds features a samurai plot through the eyes of Tenka Kumou, a ferryman, and his two siblings.

Don't worry, this isn't all history. If it's the ghosts and curses of Mo Dao Zu Shi that interested you the most, this anime has both.
