Five original Magic: The Gathering paintings from the 1993 Alpha set were sold at Heritage Auction for a combined total of $483,600, including the Demonic Tutor piece illustrated by Douglas Shuler which was sold for $168,000!
Heritage Auctions offered this rare opportunity to own original Alpha art on behalf of the "Len Osborne MTG Collection." The Demonic Tutor was created in acrylic on illustration board with an image area of 6.75" x 5.75". It is sealed in an 11.75" x 10" mat.
Other artworks include Shuler's other art Contract from Below, Mark Tedin's Jayemdae Tome, Mark Poole's Fear, and Christopher Rush's Flare.
Demonic Tutor brought the highest amount of $168,000, and the combined total for all five paintings is $483,600. Contract from Below sold for $78,000, Jayemdae Tome sold for $114,000, Mana Flare sold for $78,000, and Fear sold for $45,600.
