Netflix has announced that the hit series 3 Body Problem is getting all-new episodes after it captivated millions of audiences worldwide.

While details on the number of seasons and episodes are being kept under wraps, the update is a welcome development for viewers who have sent the sci-fi thriller to No. 1 on the Netflix Global Top 10, where it reached the Top 10 in 93 countries.

In 3 Body Problem, a young astrophysicist’s decision to contact extraterrestrial life called San-Ti sets the story into motion, presenting a threat of invasion in the next 400 years.

How did 3 Body Problem Season 1 end?

The group of brilliant scientists called Oxford Five is no more, with Jack Rooney getting murdered by Tatiana, a San-Ti loyalist, earlier in the season and Will Downing having his brain harvested before he succumbs to cancer.

Alas, his sacrifice seems to be in vain, as Jin Cheng’s Project Staircase encounters an anomaly, leaving his frozen brain floating in space. This devastates Jin, who belatedly realises his true feelings for Will.

In another project to combat the aliens, Saul Durand becomes a Wallfacer, tasked with formulating and executing plans only in his mind. He accepts the role against his will lest he experience another assassination attempt on his life.

Finally, Auggie Salazar goes off-grid, disillusioned, after realising that her nanotechnology breakthroughs may do more harm than good if it ends up in the wrong hands.

What could the next episodes of 3 Body Problem explore?

Despite the tragic storylines for our leads in Season 1, there is still hope for humankind, as Da Shi reminds Jin and Saul that bugs always survive: “People hate bugs, been trying to get rid of them forever... Look around, they’re not going anywhere.”

Story-wise, there is still much to explore, with two more books left to adapt in Liu Cixin’s bestselling trilogy: The Dark Forest and Death’s End.

Season 1 also left a few plot threads yet to be dealt with, like Ye Wenjie’s codified Einstein joke to Saul. Until the finale, viewers were being teased about what’s next. Jin, Saul, and Auggie dealt with the aftermath of their failures, Tatiana reactivated for missions, and even Thomas Wade got directly involved with the San-Ti.

3 Body Problem is now streaming on Netflix.
