3 Body Problem's Trailer Music: This Bitter Earth Soundtrack
The newest Netflix TV series, 3 Body Problem, already reeled in its fans based on the trailer's music alone.
The music being played in 3 Body Problem is none other than This Bitter Earth by Dinah Washington. The song was written and produced by Clyde Otis; it peaked at #1 on the U.S. R&B charts and reached #24 on the U.S. pop charts.
Considering that the beginning of the show is set in the 1960s, this blends into how the music teases the main storyline.
Originally, this song was a motion picture soundtrack for the 2010 Martin Scorsese film Shutter Island. However, the Netflix series used a different version, the mashup iteration of the song.
This Bitter Earth was accompanied by Max Richter's On the Nature of Daylight for the 2012 launch trailer of Funcom's MMORPG game, The Secret World, making the opening theme fit the fantasy and sci-fi elements of the show well.

What Does the Lyrics of This Bitter Earth Mean For the Show?
The song suggests that life on Earth is uncaring and delves into how the persona feels insignificant in the grand scheme of things, both of which are a part of what builds the story on 3 Body Problem.
As the Netflix series starts with scientists rambling their brains for the answers to their research, a strange woman confronts the "new" reality of our main character, Auggie.
When Auggie struggles to let go of her life's work, the stranger suggests shutting down the lab would make the "problem" go away.
Keep in mind that the highlight of the song lyrics comes from the second verse: Yes, [this bitter earth] can be so cold / But while a voice within me cries / I'm sure someone may answer my call.
There is light at the end of this tunnel, there is more left to explore before "giving in." This is why there are scientists in the first place: to uncover mysteries.
This is why the stranger's warning doesn't phase Auggie and instead leads her to discover an unknown entity waiting for the impending doom of humanity and the Science of their home planet as the story unfolds...
