Ever since Iron Man came out in 2008, we have been getting a steady stream of Marvel films every year, with the number of entries increasing as the franchise grew larger. With Marvel deciding to move the WandaVision premiere to 2021, fans have come to unique realization.
For the first time since 2009, we are getting a year without any new MCU content coming out. Of course, 2009 also saw the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but that wasn't MCU, and everyone (including the actors) are trying to forget that film ever happened.
Fans were already accepting that we won't get a Marvel movie released in theaters for 2020, but WandaVision had been a sort of placeholder for that absence. Now that the series is expected to debut next year instead, 2020 is officially going to go by with no updates to the MCU.
While it does come as a bummer to hardcore fans of the franchise, it is interesting to see just how consistent the Marvel machine has been, pumping out successful films and content nonstop for a decade. Sure there have been some stumbles along the way from directors quitting projects to actors getting recast, but to have material coming out every year is surely an achievement. I mean, even Star Wars wasn't able to pull that off and now the franchise is going on hiatus until 2023.
If anything, this lack of MCU should encourage fans to check out some new content. There are still a lot of comics to get into, and video games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales are sure to keep fans engaged. Or, you can just take some advice from Martin Scorsese and watch something that isn't a comic book movie.
Marvel Phase 4 is now set to debut next year when WandaVision hits Disney+ on Jan. 15, 2021.
