2 Million Pokemon Go Players Participated in Pikachu Outbreak in Japan

2 million players attended Pokemon Go's Japanonly Pikachu Outbreak in its 7-day duration, with over 120 million Pokemon captured. The event introduced the long-awaited Mewtwo and new Shiny Pokemon.

Developer Niantic shared the details of the Yokohama event after it closed.

The augmented reality event took place in Yokohama, and concluded with thousands of trainers competing at Pokemon Go Stadium, trying to capture Mewtwo to a giant Pokemon projections and a backdrop of fireworks.

Niantic told IGN that it had learned from the mistakes of the controversial Pokemon Go Fest that took place in Chicago.

According to IGN, Niantic sent advance notice of the event to all Japanese network carriers. The way Pokemon spawned in the Yokohama area encouraged players to move all around instead of just staying in one place. Servers were segmented during the Mewtwo Raid finale to avoid technical issues when players try to claim their prize.
