1995 Hit Star Wars: Dark Forces Remake In Unreal Engine 4 Gets A Playable Build And It's Incredible

Lucasfilm

Star Wars: Dark Forces, the iconic first-person shooter first released in 1995, is being remade for Unreal Engine 4 by Obsidian Entertainment senior environment artist Jason Lewis.

For those who don't know, this is the company behind titles like Fallout: New Vegas. First announced two years ago, the project is showcased on the artist's Art Station page.

Lewis said that he has very limited spare time to pour into the remake, so it might take a while. Even then, however, there is already a playable builds of one of the levels in the game, which YouTuber Bluedrake42 got his hands on, and it is amazing!

There is so much to see in this playable build. You get to see R2-D2 in action. A little exploring and you'll stumble upon the Millennium Falcon. Unfortunately, you can't enter the ship. Either way, this is an amazing showcase of what Unreal Engine 4 is capable of and what a passionate Star Wars fan can create. Check it out below and download it while it's still available.

Lewis hasn't provided an update in three months. The last time he showed off new stuff from the project, he published images showcasing the enhanced versions of the interior spaces of the main base as seen in Star Wars: Dark Forces.

"I have the environments here mostly done, just needs more of a prop pass and some polish," he wrote, before thanking Alexander Murdoch, who has been helping him build "awesome props" for the game.

He said that he might try to do a Stormtrooper design for the next phase of the project, but he did admit that he might need some help with the human renderings. "If anyone who sees this is interested in helping out with characters, or knows someone who is, please feel free to hit me up," he concluded.

Just looking at these mind-blowing graphics, fans expect that the Star Wars: Dark Forces remake is going to be nuts. The remade scenes by Lewis all look stunning.

When he made the announcement of the project, he said that it was purely for his love for the franchise as well as the 1990s hit, even describing himself as a "huge Star Wars nerd." Before he started working on this remake, he collaborated with his fellow talented friends to recreate Mos Eisley including the Millennium Falcon.

Lewis said that remaking Star Wars: Dark Forces allows him to go crazier than he did in the Mos Eisley masterpiece. He started off with the first level in the game, which is the Imperial Base.

"I am striving to take it even further than the Mos Eisley project in terms of visual quality, and also include characters and gameplay similar to the original game. This is probably going to take some time as I don't have a lot of free time these days, but hopefully I can get it done in the not-too-distant future," he went on to say.

Now, Star Wars fans want Jedi Academy and Knights of the Old Republic get the Unreal Engine 4 treatment.
