  • Quick Answer: These 10 films, including The Iron Giant and The Prince of Egypt, deliver the musical, magical, and emotional storytelling often associated with classic Disney animation.

Think you can spot a Disney movie from a mile away? Think again. While the House of Mouse defined the animated musical and fairy tale epic, studios today have spent years perfecting their own brand of cinematic wonder. We’ve rounded up 10 animated masterpieces that capture the “Disney magic” without the Disney label.

The Iron Giant (1999)

Set during the height of the Cold War, a young boy named Hogarth Hughes discovers and befriends a colossal robot from outer space. While the government hunts the giant, Hogarth must teach his newfound friend about humanity and kindness before the military destroys him. If that didn’t sound like Disney magic, then what will?

Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

Apart from the stop-motion magic, Fantastic Mr. Fox features sharp character writing that is usually found in the best Disney/Pixar films.

Based on the Roald Dahl classic, Fantastic Mr. Fox is a stop-motion marvel that centers on a clever (titular) fox who falls back into his old ways of raiding local farms, putting his family and community in grave danger from enraged farmers.

Coraline (2009)

While LAIKA Studios captures the darker, more gothic side of fairy tales, it’s movies like Coraline that subtly embed the spookier yet whimsical elements found in The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Coraline is a bored young girl who discovers a secret door in her new home that leads to a parallel, seemingly perfect world, the opposite of her real life—except for the sinister “Other Mother” who wants to keep Coraline there forever.

The Wild Robot (2024)

From the stunning animation to the cinematic unfolding of Roz the Robot’s (Lupita Nyong’o) journey waking up on a remote, wild island, most fans were shocked to discover that The Wild Robot is not under the House of Mouse’s material.

The Wild Robot sees how Roz ends up adapting to her surroundings by studying the behavior and language of wild animals and ends up becoming an adoptive mother to an orphaned gosling named Brightbill (Kit Connor).

Anastasia (1997)

Perhaps one of the most criminally underrated hidden gems that had the potential to be one of Disney’s princesses was Anastasia, an 18-year-old girl who lost her memories of her true origins, only to discover that she is the long-lost granddaughter of Duchess Anastasia Romanov.

The Secret of N-I-M-H (1982)

The Secret of N-I-M-H has similarities with An American Tail, especially when it comes to facing the darker, dangerous side of the world.

In the non-Disney version, the animation follows a timid field mouse, Mrs. Brisby, who must seek help from a colony of escaped laboratory rats to save her children from being destroyed. On her journey, she uncovers the mystery of their high-level intelligence and her own husband’s past…

The Prince of Egypt (1998)

This DreamWorks epic reimagined the biblical story of Moses, who discovers his true heritage as a Hebrew prince and is chosen by God to lead his people to freedom, forcing him into a heartbreaking confrontation with his brother, Ramses.

The Prince of Egypt is considered to be the closest a non-Disney film has ever come to replicating the Disney Musical formula due to its powerful orchestral score, grand character design (like Hercules), and the emotional, high-stakes narrative about brotherhood and duty.

The Road to El Dorado (2000)

The Road to El Dorado shares a similarly experimental adventure to Disney’s Treasure Planet and heavily resembles The Emperor’s New Groove, but it is not a part of Walt Disney’s roster.

The animated comedy follows two Spanish con artists, Tulio and Miguel, who win a map that leads to the legendary City of Gold, El Dorado. After stowing away on Hernán Cortés’ ship to the New World, the escape, find the city, get mistaken for gods, only to lead them to a path of greed, friendship, and deception.

Chicken Run (2000)

Don’t mistake the stop-motion classic Chicken Run with Disney’s 3D animated sci-fi comedy, Chicken Little. They may have similar talking animals, but they’re far off from mature themes that may seem disturbing for children, but remain a staple among young audiences who love stop-motion films.

Chicken Run follows Ginger, a self-determined hen who leads her flock to escape a Yorkshire chicken farm from fattening them up and turning them into pies. To avoid such a tragic fate, the chickens try to fly, guided by a stray rooster, Rocky, before they end up making an aircraft to flee their coop.

The Book of Life (2014)

The Day of the Dead and a family against their son’s passion for music? It’s not Disney’s Coco, it’s Reel FX and 20th Century Fox Animation’s The Book of Life premise.

The Book of Life follows Manolo, a young bullfighter torn between following family expectations and his passion for music. On the Day of the Dead, he passes through three fantastical worlds to follow his heart to reunite with his love, Maria, and face his fears once and for all.
