Stranger Things 2 Story Was Pared Down & Shelved for Later

When you have a plot as reeling and original as Stranger Things, the direction of the story can go so many ways.

And for the Duffer brother-directors, this meant having a lot of ideas as they took the series into its second season. In an interview with Mashable, executive producer Shawn Lev shared that during the writing stage, the Duffer brothers were able to come up with so many ideas, there was just too much going on to pack into nine episodes.

"It forced us to be judicious in which stories we tell this season. So one of the surprises was, not all of our grand ideas are going to be serviced in one season."

These extra ideas won't go to waste, however as the directors are hopeful that they can be used for later chapters. Still, plot ideas aside, Stranger Things will also bank on its other strength: its characters. This season, Levy said it will also explore the relationships between characters.

"As much density of story as our show has, we have to service the characters—and the moments and relationships between characters above everything. If we stop being character-anchored, and we become pure genre, I think we take the beating heart out of Stranger Things."

I agree with that kind of thinking. At the very heart of the story, the gang of kids and even the group of adults that propel the show are distinct and bring the emotions where they're needed. This makes the whole show work and differentiates it from the rest of the sci-fi series.

Strangers Things will be back in time for Halloween.
