Rogue One Performs Strong Globally, Ranks 2nd Among Star Wars Movies to Date

If there was ever a very different Star Wars movie, it would have to be Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Apart from the lack of Jedi, it also featured characters that were not as well-known as the main cast that started it all.

However, from the pace that the movie is enjoying in terms of sales in cinemas, Rogue One may very well surpass its predecessors in the franchise. The new Box Office numbers have revealed that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has already earned $477 million in the domestic market alone.

Additionally, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's achievements just soared following its worldwide release including the Chinese market. In foreign markets, the movie also earned $437 million, putting its worldwide earnings at somewhere around $914 million and counting, as listed by Box Office Mojo. Its current numbers put it above Star Wars: The Phantom Menace to land in the second spot in the franchise's movies.

Variety added that Rogue One even inched out the likes of Assassin's Creed during the past weekend in international markets. Here, it had immediately earned $56.6 million, overtaking Assassin's Creed $45 million.

Rogue One is not yet the highest performer in the franchise, at least in China. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens still holds this position when comparing the weekend to weekend performance.

Given the difference in story focus and casting alone, this already bids well for extending the Star Wars franchise beyond known characters, so it won't really be surprising if we will be seeing similar treatment to the Star Wars universe in the long run.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards. It stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, Riz Ahmed, Genevieve O'Reilly, and Spencer Wildling.
