This is Why There Weren’t Any Jedi in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is different in so many ways from the rest of the stories in the Star Wars franchise. But perhaps the biggest change of all is the fact that it doesn't even contain any Jedi.

In The Art of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (via Comicbook.com), screenwriter Chris Weitz revealed that they had originally planned to include Jedi in the plot. Jyn Erso came from a family of Jedi, at least from her mother's side, and she was sensitive to the force. The reason why they didn't include the Jedi is more interesting.

"But we thought that it would be more interesting to have a story without Force powers, without lightsabers. We could explore a period of broken faith, a galaxy without hope. There's despair because the Jedi are gone—and without them, for many, even the memory of the Force."

Think of it as a way to create an entire generation that doesn't rely on the Force for them to go about the rebellion. This doesn't also mean that the Force is entirely gone from the narrative. In essence, the myth of the Force is still alive within the story, even if it is not physically and definitely within the universe.

The tone of the story also finds a new kind of hope, one that relies on people who are not born of the Force, so they are looking for ways to compensate and still manage within the Star Wars universe.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is already out in theaters.
