Traitor Captain America is Really Lifting Thor’s Hammer

Apparently, Steve Rogers turning out to be the leader of Hydra was far from the biggest shocker that Secret Empire has in store for readers.

The latest issue, which came out for Free Comic Book Day Secret Empire, had a literal shocker of a last page turn when Marvel and writer Nick Spencer pretty much delivered a "What the?" moment: villainous Hydra Captain Rogers lifted the Mjolnir.

Yes, Thor's Mjolnir. The traitor is apparently "worthy."

This may have gotten fans scratching their heads wondering if this is just Marvel's way of delivering a shock. But Spencer revealed to IGN that it's for real, and that it's supposed to be what it is: a big and scary moment for the Marvel Universe.

"We thought ‘what's a bigger finish than Hydra Captain Steve getting his hands on that hammer? It has so much significance and meaning both to the broader Marvel Universe but also to Steve and Steve's own history. When he picks that up, it really is your sign that this thing is over before it starts."

Though theories have started to proliferate the Internet, Spencer says that he is not yet done with exploring just why this event happened. The big disconnect between Captain America's treachery and his apparent worthiness will become a plot point that they will go back to. And it won't just be to deal with Cap's story, but even go into Thor's and the idea of worthiness.

And if you're still asking, Spencer confirmed that, yes, that is him lifting the hammer. And it's bound to get scarier and bigger from there.
