Star Wars Documentary Looks at the Women of the Fandom

A new documentary for Star Wars will look at the other side of the fandom. Filmmaker Annalise Ophelian will bring the documentary Looking for Leia to life, which will look at the female fans of Star Wars, growing up to become some of the biggest fans.

Speaking to The Verge, the documentary will look at the way that these women dealt with being a fan in the early 80s and 90s, where a common misconception was that girls and women didn't have a place in the sci-fi and fantasy fandoms.

"The perception of male dominance in fandom is, I think, accurate, and a reflection of how sexism functions in the world. I think women's fandom is in many ways a reflection of how women have always navigated that sexism."

Looking for Leia will be a nod to how the women have continued to become fans of the franchise and shown this support in many ways. Ophelian admits that she had originally planned to feature an interview with Carrie Fisher by the end of the project, but confirmed that despite the tragedy, she still set off to the Star Wars Celebration this year to meet and interview the fanbase.

Her work continues, as she tries to meet more fans and continues to work on filming until summer and fall. The goal for Looking for Leia is to finish by summer 2018.
