How Jared Leto Created His Maniacal Laugh For The Joker In Suicide Squad

It's no secret that Jared Leto goes full-blow method when it comes to his movie roles. Playing the Joker is no exception. The actor is known to have gone as far as spending time with institutionalized psychopaths and offering a dead pig to his Suicide Squad co-stars, among other insane things.

Well, a new interview is proving once again how committed the Oscar-winning actor is to being the Joker. While speaking to CNBC'sSquawk Box, Leto discussed how he was able to craft the perfect, disturbing Joker laugh that we've witnessed in the Suicide Squad trailers.

Apparently, the 44-year-old actor had to walk some streets and observe other people. He said:

I worked on the laugh walking around the streets of New York and Toronto, and I would kind of walk around the streets and see what laugh would kind of get under people's skin. You know if you hear someone laugh at a restaurant, it's a little jarring.
Yeah, I tried them out and I kind of got to a place where I would laugh and people would always turn around, like, ‘Who is this creepy guy behind me?

Knowing Leto's dedication to his role and based on his co-stars' interviews, with Will Smith mentioning Leto going "full Joker," it really isn't surprising to hear how he developed the iconic Joker laugh.

Of course, he has a lot to live up to. Previous actors who portrayed the Joker – Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, even Mark Hamill – not only gave the character their own brand of menace, but they all have effectively pulled off the memorable laugh.

From the looks of it, the people behind Suicide Squad chose the right man to play the role. Leto is a good actor. In fact, his performance even influenced co-star and rapper Common to apply method acting for his performance as well. Viola Davis also mentioned in an interview how Leto's dedication to being the Joker influenced her to step up her game.

Nevertheless, there are still some who doubt whether Leto can portray the character well. If the actor does well though, he'll no doubt have the last laugh.

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5.
