How Jared Leto’s The Joker Influenced Common’s Performance in Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad is still a few months away from its release, but the upcoming DC film has become highly anticipated most especially for Jared Leto's portrayal of The Joker. The villain's appearance in the movie is one of the most-talked about due to Leto's method acting, which had him going the extra mile to make his Joker believable. To say the least, his co-stars were freaked out by his antics off-screen.

Well it looks like the 44-year-old actor's performance isn't the only we should watch out for in Suicide Squad. Apparently, Leto's time working with Common affected the rapper/actor in such a way that Common has gotten into method acting himself.

While promoting Barbershop: The Next Cut, Common spoke to Collider about working in David Ayer's upcoming film:

I believe in [Jared Leto's method performance]. Whatever way is necessary for you to be that person, so that you can let go and see The Joker, I love that. From the time I stepped on the set, I was my character and he was his character. There was no in between. It wasn't like, 'Hey, man, how's your family doing?'

The 44-year-old rapper also spoke about getting the chance to work with David Ayer:

I just knew that world was a gritty comic book world that I haven't seen. I feel like, with so many comic book movies being made, I wanted to be a part of one of the ones that is special.
Obviously, you want the box office and those things, but I want to be a part of the special movies. And if I'm going to be a part of a comic movie, I don't want it to just be the same story, where you can just place the new name and it's the same story that you see.
I've gotta say, one of the major reasons I knew it would be something cool and could be special is (director) David Ayer. I love his work. I got to work with him on Street Kings, but then I watched End of Watch and the dude is good, man.

Common is set to play the character Monster T in the film, who will be involved in some business with The Joker. While little remains known about the abilities of his character, it is believed the tattooed Monster T has the power to manipulate his tattoos into taking a physical form.

If Common did follow Leto's footsteps when it came to method acting and everything involved with it, then the duo most likely did a superb performance supporting each other's characters.

Common isn't the only actor who Leto had a good amount of influence on. Viola Davis revealed earlier this year that the actor's antics helped her put her be more "committed" to her role as Amanda Waller.

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5.
