Family Guy Creator Takes Off Into Space With Star Trek-Inspired Series

Fox has a lot of shows in the pipeline, and they're inspired by a variety of genres. The most recent one added to the list is Seth MacFarlane's new show The Orville, a sci-fi series which also marks his debut into the world of live-action series.

Those who may be familiar with the name would know MacFarlane for his work in Family Guy and American Dad. For this series, he will be starring as Ed Mercer, a Planetary Union officer who has a chance to pilot a ship after so many downs in life.

But just when he thought his luck has turned, apparently, the first officer on the ship is none other than his ex-wife, portrayed by Adrianna Palicki. The show follows sitcom groups where the crew is pretty much misfits, but are the best in their specific fields: Gordon Malloy is the best helmsman, but also the worst authority offender, Dr. Claire Finn is one of the best doctors around, and there are even aliens and other life forms onboard, such as Bortus (an alien from a single-sex species) and Isaac, an AI.

The official trailer for The Orville has already been released. Jon Favreau will direct the pilot episode. There's also already an official synopsis, which, if you read it closely enough, puts the Star Trek flavor to the series, perhaps only with an overload of comedy.

Synopsis:

The Orville is a one-hour science fiction series set 400 years in the future that follows the adventures of the U.S.S. Orville, a mid-level exploratory vessel. Its crew, both human and alien, faces the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the familiar, often humorous problems of regular people in a workplace… even though some of those people are from other planets, and the workplace is a faster-than-light spaceship.
Down on his luck after a bitter divorce, Planetary Union officer Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane) finally gets his chance to command one of these ships: the U.S.S. Orville. Determined to prove his worth and write a new chapter in his life, Ed finds that task all the more difficult when the First Officer assigned to his ship is his ex-wife Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki).
Somehow, Ed and Kelly must put the past behind them and, with the help of the crew, navigate fascinating and sometimes dangerous adventures in outer space, as well as the tumultuous and captivating day-to-day personal relationships with their colleagues.
