Power Rangers Box Office Performance Casts Trouble for Sequel

A lot had hoped that the Power Rangers reboot film would offer something far from what we received in our childhood days of watching the TV series.

There were a lot of issues presented amongst the heroes themselves, making it a far more inclusive but also complicated and lifelike approach to the struggle of teens, sans the powers, of course.

However, even with all of that, Power Rangers didn't perform as hoped in the box office. In fact, the performance during opening was so bad, there's quite the chance that a sequel may not happen—no matter how much debate has already gone for the expected additional Green Ranger.

Basing the argument on the sales numbers, Forbes reported that a big factor is the international opening. It had already included a Chinese market, but the debut was so bad, the earnings of the movie overseas didn't even reach $50 million. This doesn't count opening in Japan, which is expected in two months.

However, given that Power Rangers will be leaving movie theaters and heading to home video release via DVD and Blu-Ray next month, there's a high chance the approximate earnings of $45 million ($145 million estimated sales and the $100 million budget to begin with) won't really be an invite to a sequel.

It would've been nice to explore more of the story and even see which gender they would've picked to play Green Ranger. I'm a viewer of the ‘90s classic myself, but I guess when you have an explosion of masked superheroes or costumed vigilantes, it's hard to appreciate franchises of the past that don't measure up to what others can deliver with the same nostalgia.
