Doctor Strange Will Have “A Different Flavor” With “The Madness” of the Comics Still There, Says Mads Mikkelsen

With Doctor Strange still five months away from release, we've gotten few details and promos for the film after the first trailer was revealed in April.

Well, now we're getting more insight as to what to expect in the upcoming movie.

According to Mads Mikkelsen, who will be playing the antagonist to Benedict Cumberbatch's Sorcerer Supreme, the movie will retain some of "the madness" known in the comics.

The 50-year-old Danish actor said in a recent interview with Yahoo Movies UK that the movie will still be unique "from other [Marvel] films that we've seen," although not veering far from the way "the books are, because that was basically the '60s and '70s — it was more like an acid trip."

He added and explained how the movie will be set in "quite a specific universe, with kung fu and magic."

We've taken that fascination of the time into something we can relate to today. So you still have the energy, you still have the colors, you still have the madness, but you also have something you can identify with. … You have all the action, all the good ingredients you get in a Marvel film, but it will have a different flavor, that's for sure.

Mikkelsen also discussed how his character's villainous trait will be approached in the movie. He said:

He's not a villain in that way — he's a man who believes in something else than the hero. That doesn't mean that he doesn't want to make the planet look wonderful or he wants to save the world as well, but he has a different way of doing it. He is the antagonist, of course, but he's not necessarily wrong.

Knowing Marvel, from Mikkelsen's interview, it sounds like his character isn't a formidable villain, which has been the franchise's long-time struggle.

It's worth noting that actor Scott Adkins also teased the movie as being different from other Marvel movies due to Scott Derrickson's showcase of horror elements in the movie. That said, hopefully, the movie will be able to offer us a new kind of Marvel villain, one that will really offer the Supreme Sorcerer a challenge.

From these interviews, it appears the movie is shaping up to be one of the most unique takes on a Marvel movie that audiences have yet to see. Perhaps just as well, since the source material is not your usual Marvel comic either.

Personally, I wouldn't want Doctor Strange to be treated in a way that would deviate too much from the comics. What's the point of going into the world of magic without psychedelic visuals that Disney's technology can surely create?

Doctor Strange hits theatres on November 4.
