How Doctor Strange Will Be Different From Other Marvel Movies

The success of films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been due to a lot of factors, one of which is mixing other film genres into an adventure, action movie. We saw this with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which director Anthony Russo described as a political thriller, and Captain America: Civil War, which was treated as a psychological thriller.

Russo also explained how this treatment of mixing up genres is what constitutes the beauty of superhero movies. As he explained back in March in a Buzzfeed interview:

The beauty of superhero movies is that there are always more stories to tell. You can go anywhere with the genre. With Winter Soldier we mashed up genres by making a political thriller. With Civil War we are doing a psychological thriller. Infinity War will be something else entirely. And other filmmakers are finding new ground all the time. You can go epic, or you can do small and intimate character work. You cando real world or fantasy world. I think we can all look forward to many more years of surprising and original superhero movies.

In comes Doctor Strange, which will apparently introduce fans to a new brand of MCU film, one which combines horror elements in it.

This revelation was made by Doctor Strange star Scott Adkins in an interview with The Huffington Post.

Adkins, who will be in the movie in a yet-to-be-revealed role, said that the Scott Derrickson movie will showcase horror elements that will be a different from the Marvel comic.

He said:

This is going to show that other dimension side [of the Marvel Cinematic Universe]. I'm sure Scott Derrickson's going to bring some of his horror element into it as well. It's gonna be a different version of a Marvel comic.

Going through Derrickson's film repertoire, this news doesn't really come as a surprise as the filmmaker has been known for taking on projects with tones of darkness and horror like Deliver Us from Evil (2014) and The Exorcism of Emily Rose(2005).

This move is perhaps expected, since as Adkins mentioned, the movie will show other dimensions of Marvel. It would make sense if horror elements will be featured in other dimensions where all sorts of magical creatures can appear.

That said, Doctor Strange is still PG-13, so don't go expecting to see a full-on horror film in theaters.

Doctor Strange hits theaters on November 4.
