It's already been many months since George R. R. Martin teased that he might complete The Winds of Winter at some point in 2021. The author then released several writing updates on his website, which – while not as encouraging as fans might have liked – still implied that he is hard at work, writing, and editing. But The Winds of Winter is not Martin's only project.

Since the beginning of the HBO Game of Thrones adaptation in 2011, the 71-year-old author has enjoyed being involved in its writing and production, writing some episodes himself.

Currently, he is working on a Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon that adapts part of his book, Fire and Blood, and is expected to be released on HBO and HBO max in 2022. But is this the only Game of Thrones project currently in the making? With one canceled prequel project having preceded House of the Dragon, fans are bound to wonder.

According to an exclusive article published in Variety on the 21st of January, it might not be. An HBO adaptation of Tales of Dunk and Egg, another beloved book taking place in Westeros, is reportedly in the making.

Here's what we know so far:

Tales of Dunk & Egg Release Date and Trailer

The Tales of Dunk and Egg adaptation is currently at a very early stage, so there is no known release date or trailer. It would likely be completed later than House of the Dragon, whose writers, directors, and the main cast are already known.

Tales of Dunk & Egg Cast

There are currently no known cast members for the Tales of Dunk and Egg TV show. For the time being, HBO and George R. R. Martin have not commented. So early in the show's development, we can only hope that the prequel project will fare better than its discarded predecessor.

Tales of Dunk & Egg Timeline

Like the House of the Dragon, Tales of Dunk and Egg is a prequel. It would be based on one or more of Martin's novellas about the adventures of two unlikely heroes: knight Ser Duncan the Tall, known as Dunk, and his squire, a young Aegon V Targaryen, called Egg. There are three novellas about Dunk and Egg: The Hedge Knight (1998), The Sworn Sword (2003), and The Mystery Knight (2010).

The novellas have also been published collectively as a full-length book titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (2015). The story takes place 89 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

This is all we know so far about this new HBO project. Unfortunately, fans can't keep their hopes up yet, as HBO has not elaborated on the Tales of Dunk and Egg adaptation. But the novellas are well-loved by Martin's fans and had been obvious candidates for adaptation ever since discussions about a prequel series began.

We can only wait and see if the adventures of Dunk and Egg will move to our screens – and when.

In the meantime, you might want to check out the existing A Song of Ice and Fire books including the available The Winds of Winter chapters or read some other books by George R. R. Martin.
