Sword Art Online: Who is Mito? New Character Introduced in Progressive Aria of a Starless Night Anime Movie 2nd Teaser

Who is Mito in Sword Art Online? She's a new character introduced in an upcoming movie for the series.

If you're not already aware, there was a whirlwind of activity within the anime sphere during AnimeJapan 2021. Over a period of two days, updates were coming fast and furious, but the cream de la cream came at the end of day 1 when one of the most hotly anticipated new titles of 2021 finally revealed some solid new information.

In a subtitled trailer released by Aniplex, fans get their first real look at the upcoming anime movie Sword Art Online the Movie Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night, and meet a new character in the process. The trailer also reveals they will release the movie this coming fall in Japan. Pretty sweet!

Sword Art Online: Who is Mito?

As you saw in the trailer, we get to meet a new character in this movie named Mito (played by Inori Minase). So who is she? Well, unfortunately, information about this character is pretty scarce, so all we can do is speculate based on what we already know about the story.

Originally a spinoff light novel series penned by the same creator of the shonen light novel series Sword Art Online (available now on both Crunchyroll and Funimation), the story is a floor-by-floor retelling of the Aincrad story from the first season of Sword Art Online. Only this time it's told from Asuna's perspective.

In the trailer embedded above, we see Asuna encounters many new people after she logs in to the game. One of them is a lavender-haired fighter named Mito who appears to be quite the powerful fighter. What really intrigued me, however, is the few seconds we see her curled up in a ball on her bed alone. Those few seconds alone tell me that this is a character who is capable in combat but is having problems dealing with how she feels about being locked in the death game.

While I dropped out of the original television series during the War of Alicization arc of the television series, I'm still very excited to revisit one of the best arcs of the entire franchise while looking through the eyes of the series' best heroine.
