Yellowstone Director Details John Dutton's Death and Surprise When Fans Didn't See It Coming
Yellowstone season 5 episode 9 showed John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) dead with a gunshot wound.
Prior to the show, news had been buzzing about Costner's exit due to his year-long back-and-forth creative differences with show creator Taylor Sheridan.
"I was reading Twitter and it's strange the number of people who seemed upset that John Dutton was killed off, despite knowing that Kevin [Costner] himself said he wasn't coming back to the show," Voros said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Voros sheds light on the possibility that perhaps "even in the face of that information, people didn't want it to be true", especially since John Dutton is an essential protagonist in keeping Yellowstone going.
She added that garnering outraged reactions from fans is considered a good sign for Yellowstone, "You're supposed to be outraged he was killed. The characters are outraged that he's killed. So in a strange way, it is the point. You are not supposed to be okay with it."
How John Dutton's Death Affects the Future of Yellowstone
Costner's (John Dutton) last episode in Yellowstone presumed him to have died by suicide before later confirming that Sarah Atwood (played by Dawn Olivieri) was behind the hitman responsible for his death.
For the uninitiated, Sarah is the girlfriend of John's son Jamie (Wes Bentley) who wanted John dead for selfish interests. In this case, she plotted John's death so his son could take over his mantle.
As relieving as it is that John did not die by suicide, Jamie's got a lot of thinking to do before he can 'move forward' from Sarah's confession of hiring the hitmen.
It would be best to believe that his father's death will determine the trajectory of his life from that day forward.
