James Marsden has opened up about missing Hugh Jackman on the set of Avengers: Doomsday, as Wolverine’s appearance in the film has yet to be confirmed.

The original X-Men are officially making their way into the MCU, with Professor X, Magneto, Beast, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Mystique, and Gambit set to join the fight against Doctor Doom.

However, knowing how much stronger they are with Wolverine by their side, fans are left wondering if the adamantium-clawed hero will finally make his debut in an Avengers movie?

James Marsden and Hugh Jackman famously worked together in the X-Men film franchise, from the original trilogy to X-Men: Days of Future Past.

While their characters were fellow X-Men, they were also rivals, clashing over leadership styles, ideologies, and their shared love interest, Jean Grey.

However, behind the scenes, Marsden admitted he missed Jackman on the set of Avengers: Doomsday

While promoting his new Hulu original film, Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, the actor spoke about returning as the iconic Cyclops. But this time, without going head-to-head with Jackman’s Wolverine.

“I love Hugh Jackman, and I love the dynamic between Wolverine and Cyclops,” he told ComicBook

Marsden described their rivalry as a “brotherly, healthy competition,” admitting that they often “annoyed each other.”

“It did feel like a brotherly relationship. I wouldn’t say that I was excited to slide into that role without him barking in my ear,” he continued. “He was missed. I’m trying to… answer without saying too much… Yeah, that’s my answer.”

Evidently, Marsden tries his best not to reveal anything about Avengers: Doomsday or whether Jackman will be in it.

So far, there’s no official word on whether Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine in Avengers: Doomsday

However, persistent rumors suggest he could be involved following his MCU debut in Deadpool & Wolverine.

In fact, Jackman himself has hinted that he may not be done with the character.

“My gut says [I’m] not done,” he said on The View. “But that’s just me. Marvel might have different ideas.”

He also told Cynthia Erivo during Variety’s Actors on Actors that Deadpool & Wolverine “doesn’t feel like the end” of his run, unlike how he felt after Logan.

“When I saw Deadpool, I was like, ‘Oh. I see 48 Hrs. I see Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte,’” Jackman explained. “But I kept pushing it down, telling myself I was done. Then I thought, ‘You know what? I’ve changed my mind. It’s not that big of a deal–I’m not even going to apologize.’ And it was so awesome.”

At this point, it certainly seems likely that Jackman will return as Wolverine–but when and where that will happen remains a mystery.
