Will There Be a Fantastic Beasts 4? Here's What We Know So Far

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is set to hit the North American theaters this coming Easter weekend which will continue Newt Scamander and his friends' journey in the Wizarding World in the early 20th century. While the film is expected to be somewhat a hit assuming that it will have a similar performance as the previous two films, you might be wondering if there's going to be a fourth Fantastic Beasts film. Well, here is what we know so far.

According to Variety, there is no script written yet for the fourth Fantastic Beasts film which means that Warner Bros. has NOT given an official greenlit yet for the next installment. The studio executives are waiting for how The Secrets of Dumbledore is received before they'll decide if they will move forward with a fourth and fifth film.

There have been reports before that the Fantastic Beasts team was planning for the franchise to be a five-film series. However, there is a possibility that we might not see their ambitious plan come to life if The Secrets of Dumbledore ends up becoming a flop. Right now, there's nothing official yet about a fourth Fantastic Beasts film happening and the only way for it to be given an official greenlit is if a lot of people will show up in theaters to see the film.

The question now is if there's a chance for The Secrets of Dumbledore to meet those expectations. While the critical reception has been mixed, it's not necessarily an indication that it will affect the audience's interest and there's no evidence that it has persuaded them to rethink about seeing the film. So far, it has grossed $56.9 million at the global box office which is a good sign.

However, we are still living in the pandemic era so the box office results might not reach the high numbers that the previous films have so we have to be cautiously optimistic regarding its overall reception. In a few weeks' time, we shall be able to find out if it did well enough for the studio to give it an official greenlit.

Per the official synopsis, The Secrets of Dumbledore is set in the 1930s leading up to the Wizarding World's involvement in World War II and "will explore the magical communities in Bhutan, Germany, and China in addition to previously established locations including Brazil, the United States, and United Kingdom. With Grindelwald's power rapidly growing, Albus Dumbledore entrusts Newt Scamander and his friends on a mission that will lead to a clash with Grindelwald's army, and will lead Dumbledore to ponder how long he will stay on the sidelines in the approaching war."

Returning cast members include Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Callum Turner, and Jessica Williams. Mikkelsen joins as Gellert Grindlewald, replacing Depp who played the role in the last two films. David Yates is also back to direct the film.
