The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has finally made a decision about Will Smith following the shocking incident at the 2022 Oscars. It has just been confirmed that the Suicide Squad star will be banned from the Academy Awards for 10 years following the controversial slapping incident involving comedian Chris Rock.
The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has made a decision regarding Will Smith. The statement, which was sent by Academy’s CEO Dawn Hudson and president David Rubin, reveals the decade-long ban.
"The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards," the statement reads. It then continues with an apology addressed to Chris Rock.
"We want to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances. We also want to thank our hosts, nominees, presenters and winners for their poise and grace during our telecast," it reads.
The statement concludes with a promise to be more careful about protecting those who are attending the Oscars.
"This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s behavior is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests, and restoring trust in the Academy. We also hope this can begin a time of healing and restoration for all involved and impacted," it reads.
During the Oscars, Chris Rock made a joke referencing Jada Pinkett Smith's baldness, not knowing that Will Smith's wife suffers from alopecia. Smith himself initially laughed at the joke but Pinkett Smith looked nonplussed, prompting Smith to snap and storm on stage to slap Rock.
Will Smith has already resigned from the Academy following the incident.
