It’s a sad day for Yuri on Ice fans as the film is no longer in production. Because of the news, many fans are asking why the Yuri on Ice: Ice Adolescence film was canceled.
Even though the original anime series only got one season, it continues to have a dedicated following, with many still hoping it will get a proper continuation.
While the film’s cancelation is disappointing news for most fans, it doesn’t come as too much of a surprise given the lack of updates in recent years.
Yuri on Ice Movie Canceled after Years of No Updates
MAPPA released the Yuri on Ice TV anime back in fall 2016, and it received positive reviews from fans, critics, and even professional ice skaters. Thanks to its success, an anime film was announced back in April 2017.
The movie was originally scheduled to be released in 2019, but it was delayed.
Then in 2019, a teaser trailer was finally released in Japan, though it was only in November 2020 that the trailer was shared worldwide.
Since then, there has been no proper update on the film’s status.
It didn’t help that the film was removed from the MAPPA website, not to mention that MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka revealed that Yuri on Ice did not generate significant earnings.
Given this, many fans thought that the film might get canceled at some point. That turned out to be the case as the film’s cancelation was confirmed in the Ice Adolescence official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Why Is the Yuri on Ice: Ice Adolescence Film Canceled?
Ice Adolescence’s cancelation came with a statement from the film’s production committee and MAPPA. There, it was revealed that the film’s cancelation came about after an internal discussion.
To be exact, the cancelation was decided because of “various circumstances,” though no specific details were given.
The statement also came with an apology to fans who were eagerly awaiting the film’s release, though there was no word on what the future of the franchise will be.

As expected, the film’s cancelation announcement disappointed many fans who were still hoping that the film would get released at some point.

Thus, it’s likely that MAPPA won’t produce a new anime in the series anytime soon, if at all.
