But I suppose it takes more than that to persuade the average anime viewer of Frieren's popularity and why the vast majority rated it higher than any other existing fantasy anime.
In case you didn’t know, Frieren has a rating of 9.1/10 on MyAnimeList and a 9/10 on IMDB as of writing.
With such a high rating, other anime fans would seriously take a look at it and ask why. Understandably, many viewers couldn’t get the hype about Frieren.
Honestly, it is nothing fancy, which makes it easy for several people to regard Frieren as an uninteresting show. But we discuss below what makes this fantasy anime stand out from the rest.
Frieren Has Amazing Production Values
As I said, Frieren is nothing fancy and flashy, yet it has amazing production values, especially when it matters the most, thanks to Madhouse and the rest of the show’s production team.
It boasts beautifully detailed backgrounds, making it more scenic. The buildings, landscapes, grasslands, forests, and even the bridges and canals are meticulously drawn, which creates a more immersive setting.
The character designs are also simplistic but distinct and expressive, which captures their personalities and emotions while maintaining a consistent aesthetic.
Frieren Offers a Different Story
Frieren has a unique approach to telling its story to both readers and viewers alike.
It doesn’t follow the usual fantasy stories where a main character is burdened with the task of saving the world or reforming a declining kingdom.
In fact, Frieren lacks a lot of fantasy and character tropes we see in other anime of the same genre, which many of us dislike.
It has a simple story that is easy to follow and understand, and it’s not trying hard to be something it isn’t, which is one of the most common problems in anime as a whole.
Frieren Is Not Problematic
Frieren is an anime that has very few flaws. It takes its characters seriously, and it doesn’t make them do anything out of character that will cause any noise or controversy in the community.
Instead, Frieren does everything good, including the dialogue, the world-building, how the plot unfolds, the fighting, the music, and so on.
It is one of the very few anime in the fantasy genre that is done on a higher level.
