- Quick Answer: Hulu cancelled the Buffy reboot due to a "too young" pilot and executive friction, despite Sarah Michelle Gellar’s return and a well-received 90-minute script rewrite.
Fans are still reeling over Hulu's decision to pull the plug on the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, and there have been questions about what led them to the shocking cancellation.
The revival of the hit series titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale would have brought back Sarah Michelle Gellar to play her iconic character and introduced a new vampire slayer played by rising star Ryan Kiera Armstrong. For months, fans were waiting to see whether the streamer would give a series order to the highly anticipated project.
Why Hulu Decided to Cancel the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot

A recent report from Deadline shed some light on what led Hulu to the decision to shelve the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot after the pilot was produced.
They heard from sources that the original pilot, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloe Zhao, was "not perfect," prompting a script rewrite by writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman.
There was an expectation that the project might still move forward. However, by Friday last week, Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich informed the executive producers, which include Gellar, that it had been cancelled.
The report claimed that, after the original pilot was screened, Hulu had concerns that "it played too young" and some of the executives also felt that the potential series was too "small." This is despite the initial mandate that the reboot would keep the spirit of the original.
The new rewrite of the script was set at 90 minutes, with more scenes for Gellar's Buffy, and has the vibe of a streaming show rather than a network show. It was also well-received by the studios 20th Television and Searchlight Television, which led to talks of a potential pickup.
However, according to the report, it was Erwich who decided to pull the plug, and there were claims that he expressed that the series "wasn’t for him." Some have also suggested that the rewritten version was too expensive, while some said that it fell short of the original's high bar.
Despite the project's cancellation, there is still an intention for Hulu to develop another take on the Buffy IP within the next couple of years.
What Does Sarah Michelle Gellar Think of the Buffy Reboot's Cancellation?

In an interview with People, Gellar weighed in on Hulu's decision to cancel the Buffy reboot and revealed that she learned about the news during the day of the premiere of her new film, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.
"I was just about to take the stage in front of all the fans. Hulu had decided not to move forward with the Buffy revival. Let me tell you, nobody saw this coming," she recalled.
"I've been asked since the day I left to return to Sunnydale. And it never occurred to me that it was something I was going to do. Then four years ago, Chloe, the witch that she is — and I say that as a good thing — comes into my life. In one meeting, she makes me say 'yes' to something I never saw on my radar. That was because of the deep love and commitment and passion she had for this character. It was like I was stepping back in time."
Gellar also confirmed that an executive, whom she didn't name, was behind the decision to kill the project, as he had not seen the original series.
"We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn't for him," she said.
"That's very hard when you're taking a property that is as beloved as Buffy, not just to the world, but to me and Chloe. So that tells you the uphill battle that we had been fighting since day one, when your executive is literally proud to tell you that he didn't watch it."
