- Quick Answer: Amanda Seyfried passed on playing Gamora due to concerns over heavy prosthetic makeup and career risks, but remains completely content with her choice.
Before Zoe Saldaña brought the lethal assassin Gamora to life in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, Marvel Studios originally pursued Oscar-nominated actress Amanda Seyfried for the iconic role.
While passing on a billion-dollar MCU franchise might seem like a missed opportunity on paper, Seyfried has repeatedly stood by her decision. As the MCU continues to evolve its cosmic slate, Seyfried has opened up about her true feelings on missing out on the superhero project.
Amanda Seyfried Gets Honest About Why She Doesn't Regret Turning Down Guardians of the Galaxy Lead Role

During a recent Q&A with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, Amanda Seyfried reflected on her initial hesitation when presented with the chance to portray the Guardians of the Galaxy's lead role ahead of its 2014 debut.
The Oscar nominee admitted that Gamora's role was "just not for me," noting that she made the decision "for my family" to not take on the character.
"I think turning down Guardians of the Galaxy was just so obvious to me at the time," Seyfried explained in the interview. "I'm like, 'This is not going to be a hit. The tree and the raccoon are talking to each other. And also they're all in space.' And I was just like, 'This will ruin my career if this is bad. And there's a high chance that this could be bad.'"
On a reported budget of around $170 million, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 went on to earn $773.3 million worldwide ($333.2 million domestic and roughly $440.1 million internationally).
Seyfried continued, clarifying how she really felt about joining the superhero universe: "I mean, obviously I was wrong. But I still don't take back that decision. I made it for myself. I made it for my family that I knew I wanted to have. And I just don't want to spend all the time in the makeup trailer. I just can't sit still anyway. I really don't like stunts, and I don't like heights, and I don't like pretending to be the entire world. I need something to hold on to.
Could Zoe Saldaña's Gamora Potentially Return to the MCU?
Zoe Saldaña seamlessly stepped into the role of Gamora, turning the character into a cornerstone of both the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and the broader Avengers crossover. However, after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ended, questions lingered regarding Gamora's future in the MCU.
Following the release of Vol. 3, Saldaña publicly stated that her time playing Gamora has come to a natural end, expressing that her personal wish is to "let a brown girl play Gamora", not only to "give the opportunity to a woman of color" but to retire from playing the hero permanently.
Gamora's alternate variant in Avengers: Endgame chose a path away from the Guardians, officially finding a new family among the Ravagers at the end of their third solo outing. While Saldaña appears to have retired from the franchise, the Multiverse Saga remains open to doors for variant iterations. Stay tuned!
