What Has The Director Said About You Can See Everything?

Directors Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim discuss their take on Elizabeth Holmes’ story in the hit documentary You Can See Everything, which continues its successful box office run.

Oppenheim said during a Q&A at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival (via Goldderby):

  • "We were responding to a real-life human optical illusion. That’s who she is.”

As the two recalled how they got involved in the project, they revealed that it all started at the Magic Castle, where the mention of Holmes’ name reminded them that she had been talking to A24 about making a documentary.

And from there, the rest was history. Fielder added:

  • "I was interested in Holmes, but I didn’t think there was necessarily a documentary there.”

Fielder admitted that he might find Holmes “the most sincere, honest, and trustworthy person” if he knew nothing about the Theranos scandal. He continued:

  • “But I knew what she’d been accused of, and that made me distrust the person sitting in front of me. I was constantly clocking that tension in my own thoughts, and we thought it could be interesting to capture that somehow."

The tension began when they started filming Holmes and Billy Evans at their home with their two young children, before she began her prison sentence.

As Fielder eventually became part of the scenes, the filmmakers decided to use his presence to their advantage, turning him into an accidental investigator. Fielder explained:

  • "For a film where you’re evaluating honesty and sincerity on someone’s face, that first moment matters. The way a person registers a question can feel important, even before they answer."

Evidently, Fielder and Oppenheim's approach gives a closer look at the tension between Holmes’ public image and the allegations that ultimately defined her story.
