In Ooku: The Inner Chambers, an epidemic brought upon by an infectious disease called "red-face small pox" has been taking the lives of men of different ages.
Because of its high mortality rate, the male population in the world has been reduced to the extreme.
It came to a point where women had to step up their game and assume the posts left by the male demographic, including the Shogunate.
Fortunately, 80 years later, the male population finally stabilized. But this doesn’t mean that everything will return to normal, as the women have been fighting for male brides, and only those who are in the upper echelon can bring home a husband.
But if you’re a Shogun and you have an Ooku, you will not have a problem picking a handsome and capable bedchamber attendant who will help you continue your generation.
The story is set in Ooku, where 3,000 beautiful men have been gathered to serve the female shoguns. But during the reign of the eighth shogun, Yoshimune, the numbers don’t even come close to 800.
These men are divided into two groups: the omemies who may cross the shogun’s sight and those who may not.
Both groups are further divided into ranks, and they are overlooked by the Senior Chamberlain, the most powerful man who serves the Ooku.
Ooku: The Inner Chambers is not your ordinary period drama. It has a unique twist that explores societal dynamics and gender roles. It also dives deep into thought-provoking themes of political intrigue, power, gender, and more.

Is Ooku: The Inner Chambers Live-Action on Netflix?
Unfortunately, both the live-action films and TV series of Ooku: The Inner Chambers are not on Netflix.
However, the Ooku: The Inner Chambers anime adaptation is on Netflix. It has a total of 10 episodes, with the pilot episode running for over an hour.
The anime’s cast is led by Mamoru Miyano (Light Yagami in Death Note), as he plays the role of Arikoto, the former-Abott-turned-primary-groom of Iemitsu’s daughter.
Where to Watch Ooku: The Inner Chambers Live-Action Series
Ooku: The Inner Chambers has two live-action series, both of which are not yet available on Netflix.
The 2012 live-action series can be watched by purchasing its DVDs, but the 2023 live-action series is still re-airing on the NHK channel.
If there’s a possibility that Ooku: The Inner Chambers live-action series will be available online, it will likely drop on Netflix or other platforms that show Asian drama, such as Viu, iFlix, Viki, Hulu, and many more!
