It's easy for Netflix viewers to notice that the live-action One Piece's debut season is vastly different from their return in season 2, and the original creator, Eiichiro Oda, has the perfect explanation for why Luffy and the Straw Hat pirates are even wilder on their journey to the Grand Line!

"That's an intentional shift," Oda explained that the first season focused on "bringing out the human side" of the characters to ground the story, leaving season 2 to "start unleashing the fantasy elements" that could showcase Luffy's true strength when he faces formidable opponents.

Oda also notes that while they're following Luffy from the manga, he couldn't help but be amazed at working with Iñaki Godoy, the actor for the live-action version, considering that during filming, there were things that Iñaki’s Luffy could "actually pull off" in the adaptation, which "really helps" in taking the shift towards bigger elements that viewers became a fan of from the original.
