After the events in Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) timeline got much more complicated. So, when does The Marvels take place in the MCU timeline?
In the trailer for The Marvels, we see Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel back in action, along with Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel and S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Monica Rambeau.
We also see Nick Fury in "S.A.B.E.R. Space Station" as he witnesses Monica Rambeau switch places with Kamala Khan.
The presence of Nick Fury in The Marvels trailer raises questions as to when the movie takes place, considering that Secret Invasion, which is released before The Marvels, is supposed to be Fury's "one last fight."
The Marvels will be the third film in Phase Five and the 33rd film in the MCU. So, when does The Marvels take place in the MCU timeline?
When Does The Marvels Take Place?
The Marvels will serve as a sequel to the first Captain Marvel film in 2019 and a continuation of the television series Ms. Marvel (2022).
The Marvels trailer picks up where Ms. Marvel left off, and we see the post-credits scene of Ms. Marvel where a confused Carol Danvers ends up in the room of Kamala Khan.
Is The Marvels Before or After Secret Invasion?
Nick Fury is featured in The Marvels trailer as well, which shows that there are many connections between Secret Invasion and The Marvels.
For instance, the first episode of Secret Invasion mentions "S.A.B.E.R.", which was introduced in The Marvels trailer.
But notably, in the Secret Invasion trailer, Fury is up for “one last fight.” This left fans confused about whether Secret Invasion (which is "set in the present day MCU") takes place before or after The Marvels.
In Empire Magazine's feature on Secret Invasion, actor Samuel L. Jackson revealed that the show happens before The Marvels:
"This series has to happen so that The Marvels can happen. All these things are connected in an interesting sort of way," said Jackson.
So, The Marvels takes place after Secret Invasion. The events in Secret Invasion need to happen so that The Marvels can happen.
