Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy recently revealed the surprising timeline for the highly anticipated upcoming DCU series.

A lot of fans have been looking forward to the release of Lanterns, which will mark the official debut of the Green Lantern Corps in the DCU franchise. It's been described as a crime-mystery series in the vein of True Detective, a tone that is unique to what we've seen in the comics. There are also questions about which part of the DCU timeline it takes place in.

In an interview with EW, Chris Mundy revealed that the first season of Lanterns will have two different timelines: 2016 and, 10 years later, 2026 in the present day.

The mystery kicks off in 2016 following a shooting in the small, rural town of Rushville, Nebraska. While Hal Jordan has been monitoring the area from a distance and is certain extraterrestrial forces are at play, the local sheriff, Kerry, finds absolutely nothing to back up his alien theory.

Mundy noted, "There's a familiar tension just in terms of jurisdiction. It's not like the F.B.I. and locals. It's the Lantern Corps. and a local sheriff. That's our entry into that town and into the mystery."

Compounding the tension, Hal is forced to drag along John Stewart, a rookie Earth Lantern he has been reluctantly mentoring for the past two months. John remains a constant source of frustration for Hal, largely because his very existence is an anomaly.

In the long history of the Green Lantern Corps, the rules have always been absolute: the ring chooses the bearer. That is exactly how Hal Jordan landed the role. According to Mundy, Earth was never supposed to have a Green Lantern at all. However, everything changed when the alien Lantern Abin Sur suffered a fatal crash landing on the planet, causing his ring to seek out the former pilot as its new champion.

This underlying puzzle sets up "a second mystery that we know is down the road for us," with Mundy noting that "eventually two different mysteries get worked out over the course of the show." Drawing a parallel to the acclaimed first season of True Detective, Mundy explained how the dueling timelines of Lanterns "create emotional mysteries."

Referring to that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson season in particular, he noted it was less of a traditional whodunnit and more focused on "what happened and why." Ultimately, the creative team views this as "a relationship show between John and Hal," promising "a lot to unpack over the course of the eight episodes."

Filling the ten-year gap between these two timelines are the events of Superman, which first introduced Guy Gardner as the Green Lantern of Earth's sector. Mundy confirmed that the "fabulously obnoxious" cosmic hero will "be in the show a few different times."

What is Lanterns About?

According to the logline, Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

The cast includes Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Nathan Fillion, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, Paul Ben-Victor, Laura Linney, and Paula Patton.

The pilot is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta V. Patel, and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct.

The series is slated to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on August 16. It will consist of eight episodes in total.
