Amazon recently announced that they are shutting down the Freevee service soon. You might wonder what will happen to its original content once they pull the plug.
Freevee is an ad-supported streaming platform that offers both original and library content. As the title suggested, unlike the other services, viewers can watch their programming for free.
Why is Amazon Freevee Shutting Down?
An Amazon spokesperson explained in a statement why they decided to shut down the Freevee service.
While they haven't revealed when the service's last day will be, it is expected to occur in the coming weeks. No layoffs are also expected as the staff will be moved to Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video.
"We have built Prime Video into a first-stop entertainment destination where customers can personalize their viewing experience by streaming exclusive Prime member entertainment produced by Amazon MGM Studios, licensed movies and series, content from other services as an add-on subscription, live sports, blockbuster movies and series to rent or buy, FAST Channels, and the complete Amazon Freevee content offering," the company's spokesperson said.
There were rumors earlier this year that Amazon was planning to shut down Freevee, but they denied the claims at that time. Now, it has become a reality as they are reshaping their strategy for Prime Video.
While Freevee does not have a large audience, its original programs such as Jury Duty and Bosch: Legacy have become popular and even received awards recognition.
What Will Happen to Freevee's Original Content After the Shut Down?
You might wonder what will happen to Freevee's original content once the service has been formally shut down.
Fortunately, viewers will still have a way to watch their original content as Amazon is planning to integrate them into another platform.
Freevee's original content will be moved to Prime Video, which now has an ad-supported tier. Some of them are also going to be freely available without a subscription needed.
"To deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out Freevee branding," Amazon's spokesperson explained.
"There will be no change to the content available for Prime members, and a vast offering of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members, including select Originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a broad library of FAST Channels – all available on Prime Video."
For now, you should wait for more news and updates regarding the Freevee shutdown in the coming days as we hear more details about the transition.
