As far as we know, Stephen Spielberg has cast the talented Rachel Ziegler to play Maria in West Side Story. Ziegler is a 20-year-old singer and composer, a very fitting character for her to play. Playing Tony in the remake is Ansel Elgort, best known for his recent work in Baby Driver and a talented singer. Broadway actress Ariana DeBose will play Anita, and the original Anita from the 1961 film Rita Moreno will make a cameo in the movie as a new character Valentina. David Alvarez will play Maria's brother Bernardo.
Award-winning director Stephen Spielberg will be taking on West Side Story, which has been made since 2014 by 20th Century Fox. In 2018, Spielberg was recruited to direct the film, and the production started the following year. According to the reports, the filming ended after two months and took place in New York City and New Jersey.
