Weathering With You Breaks Japan And International Box-Office Records

According to anime and drama news outlet Crunchyroll, the movie fought for the top spot on its seventh weekend. With this victory, it became the most successful Japanese animated film this year. It ranks eighth in Japan's list of highest-grossing films of all time. After this week, Weathering With You is expected to surpass the position of Hayao Miyazaki's 2013 film, The Wind Rises (USD $114M), on the list.

Aside from the box-office success of the film, it also received positive critic reviews across the globe. This gave Japan an idea to submit Weathering With You as its first anime Oscar entry since Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke in 1998. If nominated, the film will compete at this year's Best Foreign Language Film category.

Weathering With You has yet to exceed the local and global earnings of Your Name, another successful animated film from Japanese director Makoto Shinkai. But that doesn't mean that Your Name is better than Weathering With You. From what I've seen, many fans and critics claim that Shinkai's new movie outperformed his previous works.

Weathering With You earned a total of 11.65 billion yen (USD $109M) in Japan this week, followed by The Lion King (USD $51M) and ONE PIECE STAMPEDE (USD $44M).
