Watch: The Hidden Meaning Behind Netflix’s The Platform

[SPOILERS FOR NETFLIX’S THE PLATFORM]

We’ve been getting a lot of movies about class struggle recently from Parasite to Joker, and now Netflix has decided to help stir the pot with their new film, The Platform a.k.a. El Hoyo. There’s no doubt that there’s a lot of symbolism within the film, and thanks to Think Story on Youtube, we have an in-depth breakdown of the things we could have missed.

While I personally thought that a lot of metaphors were on the nose, there were some more subtle messages that I didn’t get the first time around. For one, I didn’t know that ‘Miharu’ was supposed to mean ‘to open one’s eyes wide’ in Japanese, and it’s the character that helps Goreng see what he has to do to make the change. What’s more, Goreng is supposed to represent a parody of Don Quixote when it comes to class struggle, even going so far as to bring his own book in the Hole.

Probably the biggest complaint about the film is the ambiguous ending, and the video aims to explain that it’s all part of the central message of the movie where the “message” that we have to send has to be left with the children; meaning that it’s the future generations that will break the broken system, and all we can really do now is to make sure that the next generation makes it.

Personally, I really wanted to see what happened to the little girl when she was sent back up, but for the sake of the metaphor, I think the film said everything it needed to. I also think it was hilarious that Think Story would call this movie Vertical Snowpiercer because that perfectly sums up the main point of the film.

Inside a vertical prison system, inmates are assigned to a level and forced to ration food from a platform that moves between the floors. Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, The Platform is a twisted social allegory about mankind at its darkest and hungriest.
