Watch: Breakdown of Every Easter Egg in Joker

[THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR JOKER]

Joker had just come out last week, and despite the controversy, the movie ended up earning more than what was initially projected. While the movie is far from the traditional comic book film, it still has a lot of nods to the comics. Thanks to Mr. Sunday Movies on Youtube, we have a thorough breakdown.

While I thought Joker’s appearance in the talk show was straight out of The King of Comedy, it’s actually a lot closer to his appearance in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. There is also a sign in the film showing the ‘Amusement Mile’, an abandoned carnival which is a setting for The Killing Joke.

While Mr. Sunday does point out the nods to Scorsese films like Taxi Driver, I thought he missed out on some other easter eggs. For one, the motion where Zazie Beetz takes her fingers to her head and pretends to shoot herself is straight out of the ending of Taxi Driver. The bit where Arthur is also play-acting in front of the television is reminiscent of the ‘You talkin’ to me?’ scene.

Besides coming to the talk show, Arthur rehearsing his interview by himself is also straight out of King of Comedy.

I, for one, thought the film was fantastic, and it’s kind of a shame that it’s a one and done deal with the character. Though I’m sure some people would love to see Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker take on Batman, I think it’s also great that it’s a self-contained story that isn’t promoting any more cinematic universes.
